You may have used various browser extensions to improve your web experience, as these extensions help you achieve this by improving your page speed and blocking ads.
But there’s an extension called Shimeji that can make your browsing experience fun and more enjoyable. So what is this Shimeji browser extension and how it makes your web experience more enjoyable? Let’s discuss it.
What is the Shimeji extension?
Well, it’s a very wholesome extension created by Jarno Le Conté in 2015. When you download this extension and activate it, you see some pets roaming around your PC screen and these pets are called Shimeji (a word for Japanese mushroom that rapidly multiplies) and these pets can also multiply on your screen.

These pets interact with the elements, walk, sit, and climb while you browse in peace. You can pick up the characters with your cursor to pick and drop them in any place, and they will just stay there and again roam around.
Personally, I liked this extension as it makes my boring web searches interesting. You can also choose the pet or character of your choice from the Shimeji directory as it contains a vast number of characters from your favorite games, movies, and anime series.
As I have seen it has characters from Attack on Titan, Bleach, Disney movies, Pokemon, and many more famous series in their directory. These characters in the directory are made by the community members and the fans, and you can also create your own Shimeji too by uploading the images of your character.
Highlighted Features
- Manual Actions: You can also manually control your pet’s actions apart from drag and drop. Just click on your character and a list of actions will appear, select any and they will perform the actions.

- Vast Directory: It has a directory specially for fans, which contains a vast number of pets and characters from famous games and movies.
- Relaxing: It is really relaxing and interesting to see these little things interact with your elements while on a page.
- Can create your Character: You can easily create your Shimeji and add it to the directory.
Drawbacks
- Can slow down your page speed when using too many Shimejis at once.
- The extension does not work for all websites.
- Can be distracting while doing serious work or searches.
- Requires manual download of additional shimejis from the directory—no built-in store.
How to Create Your Own Shimeji?
To create your own Shimeji you have to first create your account on their official website. After that, go to the editor option on the top right where you will see 46 images of a blank guy.

Here you will see 46 different sprites of the blank guy performing different actions. Now to create your own Shimeji character you need 46 different sprites of the character you want to create performing the same actions the blank guy is doing.
Note: The size of the images should be 128 by 128 pixels and should be in any format (PNG is recommended).
After uploading all the 46 sprites, you can now activate your character.
I want you to see their editor page to understand the thing clearly that I am saying.
For What devices is it available?
The Shimeji browser extension is available for Windows and you can download it from the Chrome web store. The extension is specially design for Chromium based browsers so you can use it on any Chromium-based browser like Bing and more.

You can also download this extension on your phone but instead, I have a better alternative called the Shimeji Screen Buddies app. It is a similar application compatible for mobile devices with features like ghost mode for transparent Shimejis.

It has over 10 million downloads with a rating of 4.6 in the Play Store.
Is it Safe to Use?
Yes, it is completely safe to use, with over 1 million users and with a rating of 4 stars this extension is a completely safe option, but it can slow down your page speed and can lag on low-end PCs if you use too many Shimejis at once. For better performance, it is better to use limited characters of your choice and not too many.
